Borneo is the third largest island in the world's located in the northern island of Java and west of the island of Sulawesi. Borneo island is divided into an area of Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. The island of Borneo known as "Thousand Island River" because of its many rivers on the island. In ancient times, Borneo - which is derived from the name of the sultanate of Brunei - the name used by the colonial British and the Dutch to call this island as a whole, while the Kalimantan is the name used by eastern population of this island which now includes parts of Indonesia.
In English, the term Kalimantan refers to the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo, while in Indonesian, the term "Kalimantan" refers to the whole island of Borneo. The Indonesian territory makes up 73 percent of the island by area, and 70 percent (12,000,000) by population. The non-Indonesian parts of Borneo are of Brunei (609,000) and East Malaysia (6,000,000). The region is also known as Indonesian Borneo. Kalimantan's total area is 582,593 square kilometres (224,940 sq mi).
Kalimantan is divided into four provinces :
* East Kalimantan
* South Kalimantan
* West Kalimantan
* Central Kalimantan
Borneo island formerly divided into three major kingdoms region: Brunei, Sukadana / Tanjungpura and Banjarmasin. Tanjung Dato is the border of Brunei with Sukadana / Tanjungpura, while Tanjung Sambar boundaries Sukadana / Tanjungpura the Banjarmasin area.Since 1938, Borneo (Kalimantan) is a unit of administrative regions under a governor, based in Banjarmasin, and has representatives in Volksrad.
Re-establishment of Kalimantan province on August 14, 1950 after the dissolution of the RIS, is celebrated as the anniversary of South Kalimantan Province (formerly called the province of Kalimantan). Until 1956, Borneo is divided into 3 provinces, namely South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan. Furthermore, on May 23, 1957, officially formed the province of Central Kalimantan formerly known as Regional Dayak Besa,r as a form of secession of South Kalimantan, stands to be the 17th province to an independent provinces.
